Sport Premium

The PE & Sport Premium is extra funding given to schools to ensure that all pupils have access to additional and sustainable high quality Physical Education and Sport.

We are passionate about the importance of physical activity and sport in developing the whole child. Evidence shows that those who participate in regular physical activity are more confident, have greater self-esteem, and better emotional/mental health.

Some research even links physical activity to improvements in behaviour, attitudes to learning, application to studies and consequently academic performance.

How much is Holmeswood School’s allocation?

  • 2022 - 2023

    • £16,000 lump sum plus £10 per pupil = £16,370
  • 2023 - 2024

    • £16,000 lump sum plus £10 per pupil = £16,410

What are our Aims?

Put simply … we want our children to THRIVE! Our core aims are to:

  1. Improve fitness

  2. Develop skills

  3. Increase participation

  4. Improve mental health & wellbeing

We will achieve this through the following associations:

  • Headteacher is the vice-chair of a local cluster (Tarleton and Rural District Schools) and chair of the Thrive Committee, tasked with the development of health across the partnership (including the TASA and Trailblazers initiatives).

  • Membership of the West Lancashire Sport Partnership who provide specialist coaching, CPD and a comprehensive competition programme.

  • Shared facilities - close links with the local high school, local sports clubs and societies.

How was the money spent in 2022-23?

We pride ourselves on providing a rich diet of activity for all our pupils.

  • Specialist PE/Sport Coaching (West Lancs Sport Partnership)
£5,500
  • Top-Up Swimming Programme (Louise Raines Swim School)
£1760
  • Born 2 Move / Wake & Shake Sessions

  • RelaxKids - mindfulness/wellbeing sessions

  • TASA Inter-School Competitions Programme

  • TASA Trailblazers

TOTAL £15,405

What has been the IMPACT of this provision?

  • Children are physically much fitter - this has been observed not only by staff at competitive sporting events (and reflected in the outcomes of such events), but also commented on by sports coaches - namely the swimming instructors who claim that our children’s physiques are amongst the best of all the schools they work with! Furthermore, the Director of West Lancashire Sports Partnership commented that our children’s performances in the Edge Hill/Waterloo Foundation CoDa Project Dragon Challenge in 2019 were the best of all schools involved.

  • Holmeswood has been successful in securing the School Games Mark (https://www.yourschoolgames.com/how-it-works/school-games-mark/) for 8 years running.

  • Attitudes towards physical activity have improved over the years and we have had a 80% take-up of after-school Sports Club in the Junior class this year.

  • 100% of our pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 have been involved in competitive, inter-school sporting activities this year.

  • Swimming - 100% of the pupils in our Year 6 class are able to swim 25m using a range of different strokes effectively, and can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

  • Staff confidence in planning and delivering PE has improved, following the examples set by specialist coaches over the last 8 years, as has their subject knowledge in this area.

  • Impact of actions relating to mental health and wellbeing are more difficult to measure, but anecdotally, from observations of staff and discussions with staff in other schools, the prevalence of mental health related difficulties in Holmeswood pupils appears to be far less than that of children in other schools.

What’s the plan for 2023-24?

  • We will continue with the rigorous programme of physical activity through our partnership with TASA (Tardis Active Schools Alliance) and WLSP (West Lancashire Sport Partnership). The range of activities planned will ensure that ALL our pupils take part in competitive, inter-school activity again.

  • This year we intend to invest heavily on outdoor provision, providing an outdoor classroom and resources which will ensure that our Sport Premium investment is sustainable in the longer term.

  • We will also continue to recruit the services of a RelaxKids specialist teacher who will counsel selected pupils and work with all staff on developing children’s awareness of the importance of positivity through Growth Mindset activities (including Massage in School).

Are these improvements Sustainable?

The time, commitment and dedication invested by staff at Holmeswood for over a decade now have successfully raised the profile of physical education, sport and fitness to a point where it is embedded in the school’s culture.

Through our partnership with WLSP, and our investment in professional development, our school is able to provide a sustainable curriculum in which all children have access to high quality Physical Education provision.

Our financial investment in facilities will benefit our pupils for many years to come.
